Week 4: The "Grand" Finale

Do to the constraints on time the mice only got to listen to around 30 hours of their selected music. We were hoping for almost double that amount of time , but as we all know time is always a (bad word). But enough with the disappointment lets get down to business. We gave all the mice names (will be revealed at the 2015 Mice and Music conference hosted in Ms. Mann's room at a time sometime this week. We also began blasting music into our ears of our test subjects and collect data before and after the testing (Data will be revealed at the conference). Besides giving my mice names and torturing... eh... giving them a gentle dose of music, we made our data tables using none other then lovely Google Spreadsheets. Below is only a part of what we created.

I know I know all you data nerds just got real happy (probably too happy) after looking at that spreadsheet. Besides all that good stuff we made the power-point for the presentation... I mean 2015 Mice and Music press conference this week. See yeah there. :D

Week 3. Cuts, Shopping, and MICE

Cuts

We had to cut back on mice to save time and resources. We did not plan far enough ahead in.o consider every fee. And it turns out that it would've cost a lot more if we did not add some cuts. We decided to to reduce to only three mice. We decided to remove two mice from the experiment because in order to hold the integrity of the expierament we need three mice. 1 control 1 listening to "aggressive" music 1 listening to "calm" music. We are now are just seeing if higher beats per minute has an effect to compared to music at a lower beats per minute.

Shopping

The following is all I bought courtesy PetCo

MICE

We bought our three mice and we are ready to start the expierament. We will wait a couple days just so the mice can get settled In

Week 2

Budgeting and final prep

This week our main focus was working on budgeting and plans to create a cheap but efficient living environment for our mice. Our plan for budgeting of course is to be as cost effective as possible. The following is a rough estimation on what we are buying and what  the cost might be.

Mice * 5 petco approx = $35
Food petco approx = $18
Bedding petco approx = $10
Extra speakers and electronics approx= $20
Approximate cost of project= $8
*everthing else not added to the list is because we already own or have access to that product for free.

To save even more money we plan on selling the mice to people who want them along with the extra supplies if we have any. We will also ask our colleagues to see if we can borrow some of there equipment in the name of science.

The following is the steps required to make an "amazing" habitat for our mice.

1. Cut in half "moving box".
2. Wrap chickenwire around the outside of the box. (Extra secruity for those mice who are feeling extra adventurous.)
3. Place half an inch of mice bedding on the bottom of the box.
4. Place food and drink bowels at the base. ( Tupperware)
5. Cut out a flat piece of cardboard that is larger then the base of the habitat.
6. With the new flat piece cut two holes for the speakers to lay flat on top.
7. Apply ducktape so speakers won't run off.
8. Poke enough holes on upper sides of the main habitat so the mice have enough air.
9. Celebrate your very red-neck habitat with a bottle of dihydrogen monoxide.

This following week we will create/buy all 5 habitats and resources. By the end of the week we plan on buying the mice and start the testing.

Mice and Music: Week One

Mice and Music: Week One

Stage one: Planning

For week one we have researched mice prices and habitats and decided how to create a clean living environment for our mice. We have looked at multiple sites for the cheapest mice and  find exactly what they need to live a healthy life. We also decided on the music we will be playing for the mice.

Following is the type of music we will be playing.

  1. Control (no music)
  2. Classical
  3. Heavy Metal
  4. Rap/Hip-hop
  5. White Noise
-Where to find the mice?
Here! We will being buying 5 female fancy mice from Petsmart for they are cheap and are not territorial like the male mice. I will use Tupperware for feeding and drinking bowels.

-Living Habitats?
We will be creating my own using cardboard boxes and bedding.

-Food and Water?
We will be giving our mice tap-water, left-over fruit and vegetables, and store bought rodent food.
-Care?
We will be cleaning the mouses cages daily to avoid smell and make sure that the mice's well being is not influence by anything except the music they are listening to. We will always make sure their water and food bowels are full.
-After?
I plan on giving away most of the mice and keeping one for myself.

Next step?

-We will start to buy and create living habitats and research more about social and living habits of the mice. (by the 3rd)

Mice and Music

Mice and Music: Week One

While listening to your daily dose of heavy metal have you ever looked at your pet mouse and wondered is he as Heavy Metal as me? Our job here at  Mice and Music is to find a relationship between mice and music. "How?" you just asked. WITH SCIENCE! Our plan is to get 5 mice and during the day for a full week blast a certain genre of music into each of their individual cages. We will then preform social interaction tests before, during, and after that week. We will also be studying eating and drinking habits to make sure the mice are healthy and if the music has an effect as well. We will be measuring our success by the Data we receive. If we find correlation between hardcore music and aggressive behaviors then we have found data that supports our hypothesis. We are doing this because ecology interests us  and it seems like a very interesting experiment. Plus who doesn't like mice.
